My aim at TGHT is to educate about the very serious (and sometimes seriously confusing) topics around human health in a way that is as thorough, honest, and introspective as possible but is also understandable and light-hearted, inspiring, and maybe even fun!

This is no small feat, of course, but at the same time it is really important! After all, having fun, laughing a little, and experiencing real hope and joy is absolutely essential every day for good health!

Getting a Good Night's Sleep

Good morning friends!

(Or good afternoon, or good evening...wherever you happen to be!)

The other night I went to bed at the normal time (okay maybe a little bit later). I set my alarm to get up at 7:30 am -enough time to drink my coffee, give Ms D her breakfast, get dressed, and get ready for an appointment at 8:30.

But when I woke up the next morning, I looked at the clock and it was 10 am. I had slept 11 hours. I hadn't slept that late in years!

I was completely disoriented and a little panicked at first. I really thought that I had set my alarms the night before. I must have slept right through them!

I couldn't understand what was going going until I recalled that I had been burning the candle at both ends and not getting enough sleep night after night for the last week. My body needed deep rest - and it got it!

Has this ever happened to you? Or maybe you are amongst the millions of Americans who suffer from chronic sleep issues like insomnia, trouble staying asleep, or the inability to get quality sleep, which means you consistently wake up feeling tired and groggy.

(Also, did you know that 6 million Americans suffer from the condition known as sleep apnea? This is sleep-related issue as well.)

On the other hand, you may be thinking: What’s the big deal that I don't get enough sleep? I mean, what harm could it do?

Here is just a partial list of the risks to your health when you don’t get enough sleep:

-your immune system is weakened

-other hormones having to do with metabolism (insulin) and hunger/satiety (leptin/grehlin) are thrown out of whack, leading to overeating (usually on carbs and sugar) as well as weight gain

-your heart suffers

-cognitive decline sets in. Even missing one’s nights sleep can lead to issues with memory, decision-making, problem solving, reaction time, and alertness. Over the long term, chronic lack of sleep can raise your risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s.

-your risk of the “big three” lifestyle-related chronic diseases (cancer, diabetes, and heart disease) significantly increases.

Suffice it to say, quality sleep is absolutely vital for overall health. So much so that - in the opinion of this health coach - if you are chronically not getting it, then this needs to be your first priority on your health journey.

The good news is that once you do, this is what happens:

-your thinking improves

-you are more resistant to getting sick

-you experience a more stable mood

-you can concentrate better

-you lose weight

-your risk of the "big three" goes way down.

Listen, I get it. Sleep-related issues can be frustrating and sometimes the most challenging health-related areas to tackle of them all. There is a way to get a good night's sleep again, however. You can do it by getting to the root cause of the issue -whether it is biochemical, emotional, or spiritual - and then by creating healthy habits unique to you along the way!

Together, we can receive the love and SHALOM peace of the True Family for true healing and whole-ness one good night’s sleep at a time!

Now You Try It:

The first step in getting a good night’s sleep is discovering what could be preventing you from getting one. Here are a few initial questions to get the conversation going. Be sure to record your responses in a health journal, diary, or on an audio:

What does a “good night’s sleep” mean to you?

What have you found “works” for you in getting a good night’s sleep?

What activities, things, foods etc have you found inhibits you getting a good night’s sleep?

Reflecting on your life, have you noticed changes to your sleep habits / patterns during different seasons of your life? Have any of these changes been within the last three to six months?

If you could ask your body one question about sleep, what would it be?

What insight or wisdom has True Family (ie God) given you regarding sleep?

If you are on a healing journey with complex trauma, what insights have parts (ie "littles") given you about sleep?
